The guest column features one hospital system executive’s view of the four key ways his organization’s values align with those of our quality collaboratives, allowing for “exponential improvements.” Other articles focus on a new training component of the Perinatal Safety Collaborative and the project of one of the graduates of the Clinical Quality Fellowship Program to streamline medication refills.

The newsletter’s CEO column features one hospital’s perspective on participating in multiple quality improvement collaboratives. Other articles note the importance of physician experts to collaborative work and discuss how the Perinatal Safety Collaborative addresses challenges raised in a new report on maternal mortality.

This issue offers two different perspectives on one of the hot-button topics of our day—reducing avoidable hospital readmissions. In one, a CEO discusses her hospital’s decade-long approach, while in the other, GNYHA and the United Hospital Fund outline our multi-pronged strategy to work with providers throughout the region. Another article focuses on two of our initiatives to help hospitals better manage their use of antibiotics as a key to preventing avoidable infections. And an academic medical center’s chief quality officer discusses the importance of our Clinical Quality Fellowship Program, which is training the next generation of quality improvement and patient safety leaders.

Other articles highlight successes of the Rapid Response System Collaborative (a significant reduction in code-blue calls) and the C. difficile Collaborative (an 18 percent infection rate decline).
