This issue announces the start of the New York State Partnership for Patients. The guest column features a commentary on why palliative care is both a professional and moral obligation. The issue also includes insights from two participants in the STOP Sepsis Collaborative and a story about the launch of the fourth year of the Clinical Quality Fellowship Program.

This issue highlights the first-year achievements of our STOP Sepsis Collaborative. Our guest column features a commentary by the chair of our Perinatal Safety Collaborative, underscoring the importance of hospital senior leadership in effecting culture change. The issue also includes an article about a recent ultrasound training program and an interview with a graduate from our Clinical Quality Fellowship Program.

The guest column features one hospital system executive’s view of the four key ways his organization’s values align with those of our quality collaboratives, allowing for “exponential improvements.” Other articles focus on a new training component of the Perinatal Safety Collaborative and the project of one of the graduates of the Clinical Quality Fellowship Program to streamline medication refills.

This issue offers two different perspectives on one of the hot-button topics of our day—reducing avoidable hospital readmissions. In one, a CEO discusses her hospital’s decade-long approach, while in the other, GNYHA and the United Hospital Fund outline our multi-pronged strategy to work with providers throughout the region. Another article focuses on two of our initiatives to help hospitals better manage their use of antibiotics as a key to preventing avoidable infections. This issue offers one hospital’s perspective on parallels between its quality improvement work and its efforts to prevent the spread of H1N1. A participant in the Clinical Quality Fellowship Program is interviewed about the project he undertook through the program and its results. Other articles highlight successes of the Rapid Response System Collaborative (a significant reduction in code-blue calls) and the C. difficile Collaborative (an 18 percent infection rate decline).
