Emergency Department Use in Brooklyn by Neighborhood

Author/Editor: Michael Birnbaum

This United Hospital Fund presentation to members of New York State's Medicaid Redesign Team on September 21, 2011, examines emergency department use in 11 distinct Brooklyn communities. Among the presentation's findings:

  • Residents in certain Brooklyn neighborhoods have much higher rates of emergency department use than those in others.
  • Variation in emergency department use among neighborhoods is greater than variation in hospital admissions.
  • Children are more likely than adults to use the emergency department.
  • Variation in emergency department use among neighborhoods is greatest for residents with three or more visits.
