Contrary to national trends, the severity of illness, or “case mix,” of hospitalized patients declined at 70 percent of hospitals in New York City in recent years, falling the most at safety net and financially vulnerable hospitals. This trend appears to be another factor contributing to the worsening financial condition of the city’s most vulnerable hospitals.
