Mount Sinai School of Medicine

Grant Date: 03.24.2008
Amount: $75,000

To study the effect of hospital palliative care programs on the service use and costs of Medicaid patients from a group of hospitals in New York State. Palliative care is commonly thought to be a Medicare-related issue, but data show that, in some hospitals, Medicaid is the primary payer for a significant percentage of terminally ill patients. This grant will allow the School of Medicine to document patterns in Medicaid expenditures and identify ways in which services could be modified to reduce costs and improve appropriateness and quality of care.
