To expand a successful effort to recruit and train volunteers to the Hospital Elder Life Program, which provides targeted interventions addressing a broad scope of geriatric issues known to contribute to cognitive and functional decline during hospitalization.
This grant will expand the Hospital Elder Life Program, in which volunteers provide targeted interventions to address geriatric issues known to contribute to cognitive, functional, and physical decline during hospitalization. Volunteers carry out nonclinical activities with patients, such as cognitive orientation, mental stimulation, and recreational activities, and provide emotional support through active listening. Plans for 2010 include expanding the number of volunteers and broadening the training curriculum to include sleep enhancement strategies, exercise and mobilization, and feeding assistance.
