Bellevue Hospital Center

Grant Date: 06.16.2010
Amount: $40,000

To develop healthy eating and active lifestyle habits in Latino families, a training curriculum will be developed for Reach Out and Read and Health Literacy volunteers who work in pediatric waiting rooms — with the goal of helping to reduce childhood obesity.

Bellevue will develop a comprehensive initiative to support healthy eating and active lifestyle messages given to families, primarily Latino families, during pediatric appointments.  Reach Out and Read volunteers will receive training in using specific children’s books with families in the waiting room to elicit discussion about healthy eating and active lifestyle issues.  Volunteers for the Health Education and Literacy for Parents (HELP) Project will be trained to use a newly developed activity with individual parents and children that teaches simple principles of nutrition and practical ways of changing family eating to improve health and prevent obesity.
